Trucking Careers

A career change to truck driver jobs can be a good move for the right person in the right situation. A trucking career for the wrong person however can be pretty ugly. Let’s do a self assessment and to see if trucking is the right career change for you and your family. Making a career change? Considering becoming a truck driver? Truck drivers make a pretty decent living,$25,000 to $35,000 their first year. (I know that’s lower than what you see advertised.

 What you see advertised is often exaggerated or what you will earn after a year of experience for most companies) After that first year of experience $35,000 to $45,000 is common in the trucking industry for most drivers with a decent record. It only goes up from there if you keep a good job performance and driving record.  Especially if you specialized into sectors of the trucking industry like heavy hauling. The job security is better than many other sectors of the economy. However, a career change assessment is needed to make sure you are the right candidate to become a truck driver. Most people think there isn’t much to becoming a truck driver, but it is far more to driving a truck than meets the eye. One must really learn what the job requires of them and then think through what that would mean in relevant to them in different situations. Ok, let’s cut through the chit chat.Here are some advantages of making trucking your career change. Can Be Costly Over the Road Without Effective Budgeting and Money Management Couple DO sometimes become distance in relationship if each party isn’t actively and intentionally working to keep the relationship alive.How does that information fit into your reality? Now many of these advantages and disadvantages seem like they would be considered automatically by any reasonable person before making the career change to trucking. I can tell you that for what ever reason they are not. Maybe they are just so obvious they are simply over looked or taken for granted. I can honestly tell you that I didn’t even think through my decision completely, but then I was and is still am a single man, and so my decision to become a driver was easy because I love to drive and wanted to see more of the country. This being the case, when I started trucking the advantages and disadvantages didn’t matter to me in my situation. Single with little debt or few commitments a no expectations of my time or attention. These advantages and disadvantages matter most to those who are in serious relationships or are married. Also those who need to be at home for other reasons. A career change to truck driver will take a serious toll on a fragile relationship or troubled marriages. If you are in a relationship the way you evaluate a career in trucking and the way a single person evaluates the career is very different. I am getting ahead of myself and I will come back to that later. What type of person should YOU be to become a successful truck driver? To make trucking a successful career you should be a self reliant, responsible, dependable person to will deliver and pick freight in a timely matter. This means you should also have the ability to plan and manage your time well. You should have a positive attitude. You will encounter many situations that will require self control and patience. Seeing the glass half full will definitely help you out with not becoming a person who constantly stress. You should have a pleasant personality because you will be interacting with shippers and receivers who can sometimes intentionally or needlessly delay or expedite your time picking up or delivering freight. If they are goofing off and you want to say something smart about it, it may only make matter worst for yourself. With a positive attitude and some choice words in conversation, they may do what they can to get you out quicker. You should have a reasonable ability to develop relationships. You and your dispatcher or driver manager as they are sometimes called will operate as a team to be efficient and effective which will make both of your jobs easier, less stressful and will make both of you an asset to the company. Now if this sounds like you are the right person we must still cover your significant other’s attitude and personality traits to see if she is the type who can endure this career change to truck driver. Many truck driver’s relationships suffer greatly because they don’t think through the impact of trucking on the family. That impact depends a lot on the type of woman the driver is in a relationship with. A Trucker’s Wife A trucker’s wife or spouse should be a person with an independent type mindset. Since she will be head of household for the most part. She will have to be a strong woman with organizational skill and the ability to handle stress, manage time, manage money, keep a positive attitude and then be strong enough to not let it have a negative impact on her ability to parent the children if there are any. So you see this would not describe all women. You can not come home when problems arise. She will have to handle them. Even in most emergencies (what we might consider emergencies) you can’t park the truck and jump on the airplane to fly from across the country. That’s not all. If you think about it. How do must people think about truckers? Often what the general public thinks about truckers is more negative than good. They think that we have women all over the country and that we are bad attitude renegades who live for our own happiness. This image we have adds to the complexities of maintaining a strong relationship. A Trucker’s Wife must be a special lady also A trucker’s wife must be self confident, and mentally stable to the extent that her thoughts of you are not influenced by others. There will be times that she can’t reach you. There will be times that you can’t make it home like originally planned. You can’t keep a truck from breaking down where they can’t get the part for 2 days. Does she have a lot of girlfriends who are a negative and already creating problems in your relationship? If so, you are likely not to be a good candidate for a career in trucking. These are the realities of a career change into the world of trucking.
